Next year, I will be spending a good deal of my semester on a capstone project--a piece of writing.
For my capstone project, I would like to write a collection of short stories, most likely science fiction. I have been writing a lot of them recently, and I really enjoy it. I'm actually working on a few at the moment for submission in various publications. I think this will be a lot of fun, but maybe not so practical.
If that doesn't work well, I have had the skeleton of a book bouncing around in my head (and my moleskin) for a few years now, and I think it's about time I get it down on paper. The capstone project would be a good way to start this. I have written little bits and piece of things I'd like to include, but I haven't actually started anything.
Lastly, I'd like to work on my travel writing. I have stories and observations from spending a semester in Prague and traveling around Eastern Europe, and I'd like to write them down and make a collection at some point.
This is everything I've though of up to now, and I think any one would be an interesting project for my senior year.
Julia I like the idea about a series of science fiction stories. What's most important is that you enjoy writing those stories, so what's impractical about it? Look at this site. There are all sorts of short science fiction stories, and you can upload your own work if you wanted.

Why didn't you keep a travel journal while you were traveling? Remembering your trip is always a bit more difficult after the fact, so if you want to keep track of traveling stories might as well carry that moleskin right?
That book you have shuffling around in your head. Sit down for 15 minutes and write out the 3 or 4 main characters and the main story. Take it from there.

ReplyDeleteI like the sound of all of your ideas. I think that since you already have a considerable amount of framework built up for your science fiction and travel writing experiences it would be best to focus on those for your capstone. I'm sure that traveling around Eastern Europe was an amazing experience, and you should get all that down on paper for others to read as soon as possible. Once you have developed this writing and taken a stab at getting it published I think you will be motivated by the accomplishment to start banging out that book idea!
